Urban Design Framework roll-out continues in Leyburn

Urban Design Framework roll-out continues in Leyburn

23 September 2021

Following another successful Historic Leyburn Sprints weekend that attracted thousands of spectators from across Queensland, beautification works on the idyllic town’s main street commenced this week as part of the Love Leyburn Urban Design Framework (UDF).

Up to 26 new Crepe Myrtle trees will adorn the existing tree-lined street between Warwick and MacIntyre Streets to enhance the town centre’s country charm and appeal as a tourism destination.

A Council spokesperson confirmed that the new plants and streetscape design would not impact existing infrastructure or the iconic street sprints route and encouraged the community to help establish and flourish the new plants with regular watering.

The beautification works were originally flagged in the town’s UDF in 2019 which identified a number of key design measures and projects to enrich and promote the Leyburn’s unique character and history.

The Leyburn UDF project received $125,000 funding under the 2019-21 Works for Queensland program, an initiative of the Queensland Government.

In addition to the current streetscape project, the funding has also enabled the construction of a RV dump point in the camping reserve and the installation of a new tennis court fence. Additional street furniture will also soon be installed along MacIntrye Street.

To date, the Leyburn UDF has been highly successful and enabled guidance for the delivery of other beneficial public works including a bin in MacIntrye Street, a new shower facility within the camping reserve, a community noticeboard, entry signage and a drinking fountain in Liberator Park.

The strategies identified in the Leyburn UDF, along with the strategies in the existing UDFs in Wallangarra, Maryvale, Dalveen and Pratten, will continue to be rolled-out over the coming years, with Killarney set to join the ranks later this financial year.
