Council trials fresh new streetscape in Warwick CBD

A new modern streetscape that reflects the Warwick CBD’s country character and charm will be trialled along a small section of Palmerin Street.

In line with urban design trends emerging in other local government areas, Southern Downs Regional Council will replace four Claret Ash trees outside the Criterion Hotel with befitting planter boxes to freshen up the streetscape.

A Council spokesperson said that this latest beautification project was part of a number of recent improvements and ongoing works on the main street and across the region.

“In August, the traffic lights at the Palmerin Street and Grafton Street junction were upgraded to newer and more energy efficient LED units to improve visibility and safety at the intersection. Plus shared zone signs were replaced with 40km/hr regulatory speed signs in the Warwick CBD in July 2021,” the spokesperson said.

“The Stanthorpe streetscape also stands to benefit from rejuvenation works, with a $600k grant application currently sitting with the Building Better Regions program.”

The spokesperson further added that Council wanted to retain the iconic tree-lined streetscape and the recent Palmerin Street proactive works could potentially solve historical issues with the trees and address safety concerns.

“In the past, we have encountered issues with the existing trees suffering from disease and roots damaging footpaths and the street – all which present safety issues to the community,” the spokesperson said.

“If successful, the current trial could offer a solution to these issues and possibly be rolled out further,” the spokesperson said.
