SUMMARY:Australia Day in the Park - Stanthorpe
DESCRIPTION:Southern Downs Regional Council is inviting everyone to show their ‘Aussie’ pride and join in the Australia Day celebrations at Weeroona Park\, Stanthorpe on January 26. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Australia Day in Stanthorpe is all about family friendly fun with lots of activities offered throughout the day. \n  \nThe Stanthorpe Australia Day Committee has put together a great program of family friendly activities\, so there will be a hive of activity starting as early as 6.30am and continuing on through to 8pm. \nThe day will kick off bright and early at 6.30am with the Southern Downs Tri Club’s popular family Triathlon\, and the first battle off the blocks at 7am. \n“The Triathlon is a great opportunity for all ages to have a go as there are two courses including one for juniors under 12\,” highlighted the Mayor. \nThe open Tri course comprises: 400m swim; 10km cycle; and 3.5 km run. The Junior (under 12) Tri course comprises: 100m swim; 4km cycle; and 1km run. Entry forms are available from the Stanthorpe Pool\, Council’s Community contact centres in Stanthorpe and Warwick\, and from Redback Cycles and Creed and Lang in Warwick. \nThe Mercantile Relay at 12 noon will see many family rivals being joined by groups of friends and community teams to contest the Camille Cantrell Cup. All ages can contest the relay with handicapping making the relay very interesting to watch with no one being able to predict a winner. This event is all about swimming consistent times over the number of laps needed to eliminate the other teams. \nThe Stanthorpe Pool will have free entry from 2pm and this coincides with the start of the main celebratory activities and entertainment in Weeroona Park. The formal part of the day will start at 3.45pm and includes flag raising\, a citizenship ceremony\, Australia Day messages and the southern region Australia Day awards ceremony. \nThe good old favourites of Billy Boiling\, Chainsaw Races and Woodchops will be joined by Kent Saddlery’s whip cracking and some face painting and art and craft activities for kids. The park will have refreshments and food available and celebrations will continue on into the evening with live entertainment from our talented locals and band Speak Easy. \nFor more information about Australia Day celebrations visit Council’s website or contact Council on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

SUMMARY:Teach a Kid to Fish Day- Stanthorpe
DESCRIPTION:Casting a line a load of fun \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTANTHORPE Bluewater Fishing and Restocking Club treasurer Ernie Jones is excited Teach a Kid to Fish will make it to Stanthorpe again in January. \n“For the last at least four years\, we have done the Teach a Kid to Fish\,” Jones said. \nTwo members of the Queensland Amateur Fishing Club Association\, Pam and John Crone\, will come down to Quart Pot Creek to teach local kids more about fishing. \n“They’ll get taught the basics of fishing\, how to tie their knots\, how to put bait on hooks and use of various types of tackle\,” Jones said. \n“We try to explain to them the benefits of conservation\, how to protect the habitat that the fish are in and we think that fishing lays the groundwork for the family doing something together. It’s certainly a family activity. And usually the parents learn something as well.” \nAfter lunch\, participating kids will be “let loose on the creek”. \n“Last year was terrific because they actually caught about six little fish\, it was good fun. The kids get so excited\,” Jones laughed. \nHe said the benefits of learning how to fish laid in gaining a new life skill kids could utilise for the rest of their lives. \n“Anyone can go fishing\, whether it’s at the sea or in the bush\,” he said. \n“And it’s something that you can share with other people\, sit down and talk. It’s relaxing because there is no stress involved in fishing and it gets them away from hand-held objects and gets them outside.” \nThe event will take place during school holidays\, so if you would like to do something different these Christmas holidays sign up for a great day of fishing. \nThe free event is made available by funds from the State Government. \nREMINDER: Fishing in the streams is free. But if you wish to fish at Storm King Dam\, a licence is needed. \nOn Saturday\, January 13\, from 10am- 2.30pm at the Lions Park. The free event includes lunch and there will be giveaways. Limited numbers\, so register prior to the event with the application forms available in your Border Post in December. Bring a hat and sunscreen. Children have to be accompanied by an adult.
