Border Landcare Organic Group   (BLOG)

Welcome.
The Border Landcare Organic Group was formed during the winter of 2002.
Every month members meet either at the home of one of the members for activities such as a farm walk, group discussions, interesting speakers, working bees, or we may go on a bus trip to places further afield.
These are generally held on the fourth Saturday of the month, and start at 10am EST.
Talk or activity starts at 11am sharp with lunch about 12.30pm.
Bring lunch to share, cup/glass/plates etc and a seat.
Don’t forget your hat!  If unsure of directions, ring one of the contacts listed below.

BLOG membership for the 2015 to 2016 financial year expired on 30 June 2016 and will totally finish on 30 September 2016 at the latest. Renewal fees for the current 2016 to 2017 year are as follows-

$15 single or $20 per couple or family- and can be paid at the next outing.

Border Landcare Organic Group –Activity Guide for June-November 2018 (as at 25-05-18-subject to change)

Activities

Activities start with Morning Tea at 10am EST or 11am Daylight Saving Time unless otherwise advised. 10.30–11am BLOG business, ‘housekeeping’ etc.  Talk starts at 11am sharp with lunch about 12.30pm.  Remember to bring a hat, a chair and a plate to share (either morning tea or lunch) as well as a cup, plate & cutlery. If unsure of directions etc., ring one of the contacts listed below. Visitors are welcome to all events.

 

Saturday 23 June – Living Relations.

Where-Stanthorpe

Jonathan Yogesh will be the presenter. Jonathan is a locally based psychotherapist who along with his wife Radha Cohen has a practice in Stanthorpe called Living Relations.
Jonathon will outline the work of Living Relations addressing Wellness, Personal Growth, Relationship Coaching, and Mental Health Challenges.

 

Saturday 21 July Farm Visit

Where– Thorndale

Rick and Mary welcome us to their property-a former orchard that they are transforming into a productive farm. Its 3 years since they moved from Brisbane and already the operation is delivering a positive cash flow based on commercial hydroponic parsley sold into Brisbane, mixed veggies (hydroponic and in the ground) as well as pears and pomegranates which are sold locally.

 

Saturday 25 August-Wicking Bins

Where-Tenterfield

Rex and Christine are our hosts for the day where Rex will share his knowledge of   a unique way to grow vegetables using Wicking Bins which are self-contained raised beds with a built-in reservoir.

 

Saturday 22 September-Compost

Where-Stanthorpe

September sees us at Glen and Mary’s place where Glen will show us his innovative 3 stage composting system that he uses to make nutrient- rich compost for his garden and lawns.

 

Saturday 27 October-Farm Visit Cancelled due to drought

We are returning to Symara Organic Farm – a small family farm growing a large and constantly changing selection of vegetables, herbs and fruit.  The farm is owned and operated by Ray and Samantha Palmer who are passionate about growing good food.

 

Saturday 24 November-Farm visit

Where-Tenterfield

Our hosts at Arajay Downs, Rhonda and Dave Fowler, will show us their mixed farm operation-pigs, sheep and heritage poultry- on their picturesque property 10 kms from Tenterfield. After a farm walk we will have the opportunity to experience a beautiful Paddock to Plate Lunch cooked by Rhonda using produce from the farm.

Steering Group Meetings

These are usually held on the third Thursday of the month prior to the outing.  If you want something put on the agenda come to the meeting or ring one of the contacts listed below. Ideas for future outings and activities are welcomed.

Bring and Buy

This stall is held on all BLOG days. Any donations of surplus produce, seedlings, jams etc. are sold at a very reasonable price to raise money for worthy charities involved with food production.

Upcoming BLOG EVENT

As we had  to postpone the planned visit to Symara Farm  until next year due to the drought we are returning to a favourite venue for our October outing-Stanthorpe Whistle Stop Community Garden for a Spring Bonanza.Spring is undoubtedly one of the most exciting times to be a gardener and we have lined up a group of speakers to share knowledge relevant to Spring. Topics covered include-sowing seeds,raising seedlings,propagating from cuttings,growing medicinal herbs and preparing the soil for planting.
When: Saturday 27th October
Where: Stanthorpe Community Garden.Entry is from Tyrel Street on the eastern side if the Davadi Street gate is closed.
Starting time: 10 am QUEENSLAND TIME
Lunch around 12.30
The day is free and all visitors are welcome.
Bring lunch to share that reflects your wholesome gardening and cooking skills-tea and coffee supplied.
Please remember to bring your own cup,plate and eating utensils and chair-there is no spare seating available.
