Update your Android phone to protect against vulnerabilities: Alert Priority High

Google has released updates to address vulnerabilities for Android devices including smartphones and tablets.

Stay Smart Online recommends that you ensure your Android device is set to automatically receive and apply updates. See our guide on securing your mobile phone for steps you should take and check with your phone or tablet manufacturer for instructions on setting automated updates for your Android device.

The vulnerabilities include several in the code that handles media files on Android devices, such as videos, pictures and MMS. An attacker could send a malicious file to a victim that corrupts an Android device’s memory. This may enable them to run their own code on the victim’s device. The attackers code could then install advertisements, download malicious apps or steal information from the device.

These vulnerabilities also highlight the need to remain vigilant when browsing the internet or downloading files onto your smartphone. Be careful what you download and browse only trustworthy websites. In addition, never open attachments on emails from unknown senders.
